BLEEF (pronounced B-leef/belief), is a mobile app as-social-sculpture, designed to encourage the description and carving-out of crowd-sourced safe spaces for marginalized identities and their allies. At its most basic level, BLEEF allows users to post identity-based reviews of public and commercial spaces based on the sense of comfort and community experienced. BLEEF allows for robust discourse, however, as a range of lenses, filters and content offers opportunities for thinking and participating in broader anti-racist, anti-patriarchal, and anti-heteronormative discourses.
BLEEF’s core function and the goal of the app as an extensive art project, is to help foster supportive communities. As more people participate, share ideas, hope for anti-oppresive public life, and feedback, the app will grow to include new content, new lenses and filters for describing and finding the communities we all deserve.
